  • Master of Medical Science in community medicine, health care planning and health education (University of Nottingham, UK, 1975) – thesis on provision of services for profoundly mentally handicapped adolescents
  • Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (University of Cambridge, UK 1981) leading to a wide background and experience in many branches of human biology and clinical medicine (1981-86)
  • Senior partner in General Practice, Newcastle, Australia 1987-1996 (Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, 1997)
